At eight months The Child continues to live up to the meaning of her name: industrious (Amelia) and charming (Rose). As to industrious she has overcome her hesitation and burst out of the crawling gate, like greased lightning. As to charming, when awake she is all a-wriggle, wreathed in smiles (mostly), and very excited to be alive. We sat on the front porch this morning, in the cool breeze. Well, I sat, clutching the back of her tank top, while she scooted all around the bench, admiring and exploring the wood, metal fittings, screw heads etc, as if she’d never seen them before. I did notice she was less inclined at eight months to gnaw the wood. Back inside she sat in her playpen for awhile looking at a book and other objects while I read Walter Brueggemann.
-books for every taste-
Then she tuned up a little. So we repaired to the nursery rocker, where she instantly fell sleep with her pink blankie, then down in her crib for 1 1/4 hours, till the next loved one came on duty: When Amelia awoke there were two grandmothers looking at her!
Lucky Amelia.
